Alligator Alcatraz: Trump’s Concentration Camps in Disguise

by Rob McConnell | TWATNEWS.com | August 23, 2023

History has shown us that cruelty often hides behind sanitized language. In Donald Trump’s America, “detention centers” are nothing less than modern-day concentration camps, designed not for justice, but for punishment, fear, and political gain. His infamous “Alligator Alcatraz” proposal—moats filled with alligators and snakes along the southern border—is not a joke, nor a metaphor. It is the logical extension of a president who thrives on dehumanization.

ICE detention centers under Trump became symbols of state-sanctioned cruelty. Families were torn apart. Children were locked in cages. People were crammed into overcrowded, unsanitary facilities with little access to medical care, clean water, or basic dignity. Officials tried to soften the language—“holding centers,” “processing facilities”—but what happened inside those walls spoke louder: systemic abuse, despair, and death.

Comparisons to Hitler’s Germany are not hyperbole. Just as the Nazis targeted Jews and other marginalized groups, Trump’s regime targeted immigrants, asylum seekers, and minorities, portraying them as criminals or invaders rather than human beings. His “America First” rhetoric functioned as cover for policies rooted in xenophobia, cruelty, and authoritarian control.

“Alligator Alcatraz” became the grotesque mascot of Trump’s immigration agenda: a nightmarish vision where lives are disposable, where cruelty is the point, and where suffering is broadcast as a warning to others. These detention centers, whether along the southern border or scattered across the U.S., exist as his personal version of concentration camps—built on fear, sustained by hate, and defended by silence.

The danger is not only what happened, but what it means for the future. If Trump’s model of detention is normalized, America risks embracing permanent camps for the unwanted—echoing some of humanity’s darkest chapters.

Canadians, and much of the world, see through the thin veil. Trump’s legacy will not be remembered as a presidency of strength, but as one of cruelty, incompetence, and crimes against humanity. His “Alligator Alcatraz” will be a stain on history, a reminder of what happens when fear replaces compassion and when leaders treat people as less than human.
