Ambassador Hoekstra’s Disappointment in Canada Misses the Point: We Don’t Need Trump’s America

U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra has voiced his “disappointment” with what he calls anti-American sentiment in Canada. But let’s be honest: what exactly did he expect? When President Donald Trump and his Republican administration impose tariffs, peddle false accusations, and insult Canada’s leadership, it should come as no surprise that Canadians are growing weary of American interference and disdain.
Tariffs and Insults: Trump’s Playbook
From unnecessary trade tariffs that hurt Canadian businesses, to unfounded claims of fentanyl flooding across the border, to alarmist accusations about illegal immigration from Canada, the Trump administration has consistently treated Canada not as a valued ally, but as a convenient punching bag.
Trump’s open disrespect for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is well remembered. Referring to him as “Governor” and casually suggesting Canada should become a U.S. state demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of Canadian sovereignty and pride. Such comments are not merely ignorant—they are insulting.
Canada Cannot Be Bullied
Ambassador Hoekstra’s disappointment ignores a key reality: Canadians are not impressed by Trump’s brand of politics. The hate, the violence, the racism, the endless attacks on the media, and the constant political upheaval dominating American life under Trump’s leadership are not values Canadians wish to import.
We will do fine without the heavy hand of Trump’s America. Canada does not need President Trump. Canada does not need Ambassador Hoekstra. Most of all, Canada does not need to bend under the weight of Republican arrogance.
A Wall to Keep the Hate Out?
If Trump insists on continuing his divisive rhetoric about borders, perhaps it is time for Canadians to turn that logic around. Why not a wall on our southern border—to keep out the hate, the chaos, and the dysfunction that Trump and his allies are spreading across the United States? Canadians would prefer to build bridges with allies who respect us, not walls demanded by a president who ridicules us.
Canada’s Strength Without America’s Chaos
The truth is simple: Canada thrives without Trump’s America. Our economy, our society, and our democratic values stand stronger when they are not poisoned by bullying and political theater. If Hoekstra is disappointed that Canadians see through Trump’s facade, then so be it.
Ambassador Hoekstra, take note: Canada is not anti-American. We are anti-Trump, anti-hate, and anti-bullying. That is not sentiment—it is self-respect.
