Donald Trump, “War Hero”? The Ultimate Case of Stolen Valor

By Rob McConnell - Friday, August 22, 2025

In the United States, the title of “war hero” carries a sacred weight. It is not self-proclaimed, nor is it a label handed out for political convenience. It is earned on the battlefield — by men and women who have stared death in the face, sacrificed their bodies, and endured horrors civilians can scarcely imagine. For Donald J. Trump to even suggest he is a “war hero” would not merely be laughable — it would be an act of stolen valor, an insult to every veteran who has worn the uniform.

The Reality of Trump’s Record

Donald Trump never served a day in the U.S. military. During the Vietnam War, while others his age were drafted, sent overseas, and returned home in body bags, Trump secured multiple draft deferments. The most infamous of these was for “bone spurs,” a medical excuse that has since been questioned even by the doctor’s family who signed off on it. To this day, Trump has provided no medical records proving the condition was legitimate.

Contrast this with real war heroes: John McCain, who endured years of brutal captivity in a North Vietnamese prison camp; Pat Tillman, who walked away from a lucrative NFL career to fight in Afghanistan, only to be killed in action; or the countless young Americans who gave their lives in service to their country. To place Trump in their company is not only absurd — it is obscene.

Stolen Valor: The Legal and Ethical Crime

The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 makes it a federal crime to falsely claim military honors for personal gain. While a mere boast may not rise to the level of criminality, the spirit of the law is clear: society condemns those who cheapen military sacrifice by lying about service or honors they never earned.

If Trump were to don the mantle of “war hero,” he would not be just bending the truth — he would be desecrating the sacrifices of those who actually fought and bled for the freedoms he exploits.

A Pattern of Disrespect

This would not be Trump’s first brush with insulting veterans. He infamously mocked John McCain, sneering, “I like people who weren’t captured.” He dismissed soldiers who gave their lives as “losers” and “suckers,” according to reports from his own staff. His administration routinely used veterans as political props, while cutting resources that directly impacted their care.

For a man who never served, never sacrificed, and never risked anything beyond his reputation in a courtroom, to claim the title of “war hero” would be the ultimate fraud — one more in a long line of deceptions peddled to an American public he assumes is too gullible to know better.

The Final Insult

Real war heroes do not call themselves heroes. They carry their scars quietly, often haunted by memories civilians will never fully understand. They live with the loss of brothers and sisters-in-arms who never made it home. Their valor is witnessed and remembered by others, not self-declared in bombastic rallies or social media rants.

When Donald Trump ever dares to claim he is a war hero, it will not make him one. It will only expose, yet again, the hollow arrogance of a man who has never once placed service above self. To veterans and their families, such a claim would be unforgivable — the ultimate act of stolen valor.
