TRUMP VS. CNN: WHEN CRITICISM BECOMES POLICY
By Rob McConnell | TWATNews.com | September 15, 2025

For years, former President Donald Trump and his administration have treated CNN as both a punching bag and a convenient foil. To them, the network is “fake news,” “the enemy of the people,” and “a disgrace to journalism.” But beneath the insults lies a troubling trend: the expectation that media must flatter the powerful or be branded the opposition.
A War on Independent Reporting
CNN’s greatest “crime,” in Trump’s eyes, has been refusing to bow to his narrative. Unlike certain right-leaning outlets that routinely echoed his talking points, CNN often fact-checked, challenged, and questioned. In a healthy democracy, that’s journalism doing its job. In Trump’s world, it was disloyalty.
Cabinet Members Joining the Chorus
From press secretaries to cabinet secretaries, Trump’s inner circle echoed their boss’s disdain. Any negative coverage, whether about failed policies, controversial executive orders, or international blunders, was brushed off as “media lies.” Cabinet officials went beyond defending policy—they attacked the messenger, working to erode public trust in any news outlet unwilling to act as a cheerleader for the administration.
The Dangerous Precedent
What Trump demanded of CNN was not accuracy—it was submission. He wanted glowing coverage, unquestioned loyalty, and praise at every turn. When he didn’t get it, his administration went on the offensive, creating a culture where disagreement equaled betrayal.
This is not just about CNN. It is about the broader principle that in a free society, the press must be free to question authority without fear of being smeared or silenced. When leaders demand that news networks “kiss up” to them, democracy itself becomes the target.
Beyond Partisanship
Even Americans who dislike CNN should be concerned. Today it’s CNN. Tomorrow it could be any outlet or individual who refuses to parrot the government’s narrative. A press forced into obedience is not journalism—it’s propaganda.
The Bottom Line
Trump, his cabinet, and his administration can insult CNN all they like. But their obsession with silencing criticism exposes the truth: their war on CNN was never about accuracy, it was about control. And in that war, it’s not CNN that loses—it’s the American people.
