As the calendar turns, the New Year arrives not with optimism, but with unease. For many around the world, the United States of America—once viewed as a moral and democratic anchor—now appears deeply fractured, destabilized, and perilously divided.
What should be a season of renewal instead feels like the continuation of a national crisis, one defined not by external enemies, but by internal decay.

At the center of this turmoil stands Donald Trump, a political figure whose presidency has reshaped the nation’s global reputation and strained the foundations of its democratic institutions. His tenure has been marked by unprecedented levels of polarization, habitual falsehoods, attacks on democratic norms, and the steady erosion of trust—both at home and abroad.

To many international observers, the United States has shifted from being a symbol of stability to a global cautionary tale. Allies watch with concern. Adversaries watch with amusement. And citizens are left grappling with the consequences of leadership driven by spectacle, grievance, and personal power rather than unity and accountability.

Legal questions surrounding impeachment, criminal liability, and the actions of political allies remain unresolved. Yet beyond courtrooms and congressional chambers lies a far more consequential issue: the moral injury inflicted upon the nation itself. Democracies do not collapse overnight—they erode slowly, when truth is treated as disposable and institutions are bent to serve individual ambition.

The irony is difficult to ignore. While repeated warnings have been issued about foreign authoritarian regimes, critics argue that the most serious threat to American democracy has emerged from within. History repeatedly shows that nations fall not when confronted by external forces alone, but when internal values are abandoned.

Scripture and history echo this lesson. Empires built on arrogance inevitably crumble. Wealth, military might, and political influence offer no immunity against moral failure. The biblical account of Moses—a solitary figure armed only with faith—overcoming the vast power of Pharaoh’s Egypt stands as a timeless reminder that moral authority ultimately outweighs brute force.

For a nation that frequently invokes religious language, the contrast is striking. The Ten Commandments, recorded in Exodus 20:1–17, articulate foundational principles of humility, honesty, fidelity, and respect for life. These are not ceremonial relics; they are ethical guideposts. When leaders elevate themselves above truth, bear false witness, or covet power without restraint, they place themselves in opposition to those teachings.

This moment, therefore, is not merely political—it is ethical, cultural, and spiritual.

As 2026 unfolds, many believe a reckoning is inevitable. Whether through democratic institutions, collective resistance to authoritarian impulses, or the long arc of accountability, history has shown that power rooted in deception cannot endure. No individual, regardless of wealth or influence, is greater than the principles they claim to represent.

To the American people, the New Year brings a difficult but necessary challenge: to confront uncomfortable truths, to demand accountability, and to reclaim the values that once defined the nation’s promise.

Renewal is still possible—but only if truth, humility, and justice are allowed to lead.

I rest my case.
